Letting Go | S. Perales

$864.00

My re-debut! When I realized that it was time to paint again, I latched onto a series idea that I’d had over two years ago: Safe Arbors. A play on the term “safe harbors,” this series was supposed to reflect the protection and safety felt when sitting beneath a tree. I then realized that every window in our home has a tree right outside of it, and I decided to photograph each one for references, letting the windows decide the composition. This window was the first to be photographed.

What I found in creating this painting was not the kind of safety that I’d originally pictured. I imagined the trees of Safe Harbors protecting a “poor little ol’ us” from the storms of the world, but oh my goodness was there a more beautiful lesson to be learned!

First we need to talk about the bird in the room.

The Seagull in the painting wasn’t some bright idea of mine. That bird just “happened” to be circling in the frame when I was taking the picture. I thought it was amazing and a gift from God… a sign of blessing for what I was endeavoring on, but didn’t think too much of it. But now, I see that we are the bird, and the tree is the Lord, that Protective Power that helps us to let go of the past, and even the sticky present. This protection isn’t protecting us from the outside, it’s enabling us to fly despite the storms, into the hope-filled reality that we’ve been longing for. The reality we were made for. The the place where we thrive and can bring hope to a hopeless world.

Let it go, my beautiful people <3
